It has been over 3 years now (June 05) since I joined as an intern working in the CBS Interactive tech team. I was still a university student at that stage, in my 4th year studying Computer Systems Engineering at UTS. The role enabled me to gain valuable insight into the corporate-nature of technology - its applications and challenges for the company, and how I, as an engineer fit in to the equation.
My work at the time involved system administration tasks for the servers and systems in place in the company, and enabled me to develop my UNIX and PHP skills, along with the ability to be accustomed in utilising the company's technology infrastructure. Working in the tech team also allowed me to enhance my communication and interpersonal skills - the ability to express ideas and work with people with bright minds in opening up your own thought boundaries and thinking out of the box to further the company in its journey in the web space.
Upon completion of my internship program I was offered the role of Software Engineer, and at present am a Systems Developer in the tech team. It has been a privilege and a great experience to be working on CBS Interactive's web site properties throughout these years. Furthering my programming skills, being able to be a part of the development process of new features, and seeing the many changes made in enhancing the experience for our users throughout the years. I recently had an opportunity on working for our parent company in the United States in launching a local version of TV.com, and it felt very rewarding when it launched a few weeks ago.
Another great aspect to note is the work culture at CBS Interactive, as well as the people. The work hard, play hard attitude we hold dearly too in the company I believe is what sets us apart! Working at CBS Interactive for the past 3+ years has been a fun and exciting ride so far.
